Dry fire is one of the most powerful tools in a shooter’s training arsenal — but only when done right. In a recent video, POSIO, IPSC Junior World Champion, explains how to take your dry fire to the next level by breaking it into three distinct steps and tracking your progress precisely.
Instead of chasing a perfect final shot, POSIO focuses on identifying where time is lost during the draw and training each component individually.
Why Split Your Draw into Three Steps?
Most shooters treat the draw as a single motion, but POSIO emphasizes that to improve, you need to understand which part of the draw slows you down.
“We have to get to know our weak sites. We have to check where we are losing some time in order to improve those elements.”
He divides the draw into three parts:
1. Reaction Time & First Contact with the Gun
The moment between the beep and the hand touching the gun.

2. Grip Build-Up
“We start from here, and build up the grip like this…”. From the initial grab to establishing a proper two-handed grip.
3. Getting the Gun to Eye Level
Bringing the gun up smoothly to the line of sight — this is where precision matters most.

POSIO adds:
“The perfect time in which gun should be at your eye level is 0.7 seconds. That’s the target — no matter if it’s 5, 15, or 100 meters.”
Use Classic Dry Fire mode in Drills App & Video for Precision
For this drill, POSIO deliberately avoids Smart Dry Fire modes:
“We are not looking for a final result — we want to precisely go through every step using our video.”

By recording the session, he’s able to analyze the exact time of each step, identifying weak points and refining technique frame by frame.

How the Drill Works?
POSIO structures the training in five reps:
✅ Full draw (as you would do in competition);
✅ Only reaction time + first contact with the gun;
✅ Only grip build-up;
✅ Only raising the gun to eye level;
✅ Full draw again.
Each rep is filmed and then reviewed in the Drills App using the video analysis function. After recording, POSIO reviews the video in the Activity section of the Drills App. With frame-by-frame precision, he measures each phase:
⏱️ Contact with the gun — 0.4 sec;
⏱️ Grip build-up — 0.5 sec;
⏱️ Gun to eye level — 0.3 sec;
⏱️ Total draw — 0.7 sec (after adjusting for the timer beep delay).

Your Daily Dry Fire Plan: 5 Minutes a Day
According to POSIO, you can follow the full 5-rep drill daily or break it into segments:
↻ 10 reps for reaction time;
↻ 10 reps for grip build-up;
↻ 10 reps for eye-level presentation.

Do it 5 minutes daily for a week and you’ll see much draw improvements.
And don’t underestimate the gains:
“0.5 seconds may seem like nothing — but over 24 stages, it adds up to 12 seconds. That can be the difference between first and tenth place.”
For maximum efficiency, POSIO uses:
SG Timer — to initiate the draw with a loud and consistent beep;
Drills App (Classic Dry Fire mode) — to record and analyze each step in detail;
Video analysis tools in the app — to track exact times and fine-tune performance.
